Devotion
Out of all the topics the book of James covers, he spends a good portion of his time on partiality. The reason for this has to do with the practicality of the issue. The Christians at the time were coming from a large spectrum of social positions. There were rich people (such as politicians and tax collectors), soldiers, prisoners, slaves, and homeless people. As brothers and sisters in Christ, every one of them should be treated the same. But the people James was writing to were treating people based on their social status. They were honoring the rich as if they wanted something from them, and they were mistreating the poor like they had nothing to offer. It is very tempting to judge people for their earthly differences and not on what matters. A righteous and holy God laid down His life for them just as He did for us. That is the most important thing to see in anyone, saved or not saved.
